Our Restoration
In late 2004 we bought this house, which many Virginia City residents feared would succumb to the elements. It had not been inhabited for several decades, and the lack of a foundation, broken windows, and a badly leaking roof had caused substantial structural damage over the years. We could stand in the first floor dining room and see the sky in some places! Still, we were intrigued by the architecture, charm and craftsmanship of the house and set out to undertake a complete restoration, strictly adhering to state and federal guidelines for rehabilitation.
We hired local contractors for the heavy work like the foundation, roof, and utilities. Several floor joists of the second floor had to be replaced. We also spent several thousand hours of our own time refinishing inside and outside. We replicated all windows for the north and west side of the house, using the same techniques employed on the originals. Using old photos as a guide, we have attempted to replace lost Victorian decorations that originally set the house apart from others in town.
This gold and silver wallpaper for the parlor is an exact replica of the original we found on the walls. Other wallpapers are reproduction period papers.
